Team Hoyt

In honor of Father's day, it seems appropriate to share the inspiring story of Rick and Dick Hoyt (Team Hoyt).  This story was originally published in Sports Illustrated on June 20, 2005.  I was moved to tears reading the story and watching the video, and I believe many of my readers will be also.  The story is a story of true selfless love.  It is about an awesome bond between father and son.  It is my hope that all who read this are as inspired by it as I have been.  Be sure to watch the four-minute video of this amazing story of a father's amazing love and devotion available here.

Strongest Dad in the World
By Rick Reilly for Sports Illustrated

I try to be a good father. Give my kids mulligans. Work nights to pay for their text messaging. Take them to swimsuit shoots.

But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck.

Eighty-five times he's pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles in marathons. Eight times he's not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a wheelchair but also towed him 2.4 miles in a dinghy while swimming and pedaled him 112 miles in a seat on the handlebars – all in the same day.

Dick's also pulled him cross-country skiing, taken him on his back mountain climbing and once hauled him across the U.S. on a bike. Makes taking your son bowling look a little lame, right?

And what has Rick done for his father? Not much – except save his life.

This love story began in Winchester, Mass., 43 years ago, when Rick was strangled by the umbilical cord during birth, leaving him brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs.

"He'll be a vegetable the rest of his life," Dick says doctors told him and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. "Put him in an institution."

But the Hoyts weren't buying it. They noticed the way Rick's eyes followed them around the room. When Rick was 11 they took him to the engineering department at Tufts University and asked if there was anything to help the boy communicate. "No way," Dick says he was told. "There's nothing going on in his brain."

"Tell him a joke," Dick countered. They did. Rick laughed. Turns out a lot was going on in his brain.

Rigged up with a computer that allowed him to control the cursor by touching a switch with the side of his head, Rick was finally able to communicate. First words? "Go Bruins!" And after a high school classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the school organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out, "Dad, I want to do that."

Yeah, right. How was Dick, a self-described "porker" who never ran more than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he tried. "Then it was me who was handicapped," Dick says. "I was sore for two weeks."

That day changed Rick's life. "Dad," he typed, "when we were running, it felt like I wasn't disabled anymore!"

And that sentence changed Dick's life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. He got into such hard-belly shape that he and Rick were ready to try the 1979 Boston Marathon.

"No way," Dick was told by a race official. The Hoyts weren't quite a single runner, and they weren't quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few years Dick and Rick just joined the massive field and ran anyway. Then they found a way to get into the race officially: In 1983 they ran another marathon so fast they made the qualifying time for Boston the following year.

Then somebody said, "Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?"

How's a guy who never learned to swim and hadn't ridden a bike since he was six going to haul his 110-pound kid through a triathlon? Still, Dick tried.

Now they've done 212 triathlons, including four grueling 15-hour Ironmans in Hawaii. It must be a buzzkill to be a 25-year-old stud getting passed by an old guy towing a grown man in a dinghy, don't you think?

Hey, Dick, why not see how you'd do on your own? "No way," he says. Dick does it purely for "the awesome feeling" he gets seeing Rick with a cantaloupe smile as they run, swim and ride together.

This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 24th Boston Marathon, in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters. Their best time? Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992 – only 35 minutes off the world record, which, in case you don't keep track of these things, happens to be held by a guy who was not pushing another man in a wheelchair at the time.

"No question about it," Rick types. "My dad is the Father of the Century."

And Dick got something else out of all this too. Two years ago he had a mild heart attack during a race. Doctors found that one of his arteries was 95% clogged. "If you hadn't been in such great shape," one doctor told him, "you probably would've died 15 years ago."

So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other's life.

Rick, who has his own apartment (he gets home care) and works in Boston, and Dick, retired from the military and living in Holland, Mass., always find ways to be together. They give speeches around the country and compete in some backbreaking race every weekend, including this Father's Day.

That night, Rick will buy his dad dinner, but the thing he really wants to give him is a gift he can never buy. "The thing I'd most like," Rick types, "is that my dad sit in the chair and I push him once."

On Saturday, May 25, 2013 I attended a fair where I set up a lot of dried herbs for sale, and taught others about using herbs.  I had a friend ask about a recipe using calendula for a ladies group she belongs to.  Here is a great recipe for calendula-orange cookies.  ENJOY!

CALENDULA-ORANGE COOKIES

 2 -3 T. dried calendula blossoms (or 6 - 8 fresh blossoms)
½ c. real butter, at room temperature
½ c. raw sugar
Grated zest of two oranges (orange part of the peel only)
2 T. orange concentrate, at room temperature
1 t. vanilla
2 eggs, lightly beaten
2 c. all purpose flour (whole grain is best)
2 ½ t. baking powder
¼ t. sea salt
1 c. almond halves
Preheat oven to 350° F. Lightly grease 2 cookie sheets. Rinse calendulas (if using fresh petals). Pull off petals and set aside. Do not rinse if using dried. Fresh or dried, chop the petals finely or process in a food processor. In a bowl, cream butter, sugar and orange rind until fluffy. Add orange juice concentrate and vanilla. Mix in eggs, stirring until blended. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Blend calendula petals and dry ingredients into creamed mixture. Drop dough by teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Press an almond half into each cookie. Bake 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Makes 3 to 4 dozen.

Note:  When making food with flower petals, blossoms or dried flowers, use only organic varieties.  Never use them from a garden center that sprays their plants, or from a source that you are not sure of.

This recipe was slightly modified from the original recipe at Lemon Verbena Lady's Blog

Here is a great video segment done by Bill Moyers in 2001 about the chemicals we are being exposed to on a daily basis.  If there were 20 new chemicals invented weekly in 2001, how many more have we been exposed to in the past 12 years since this segment was aired?  It's truly sad that there are so many people who are sick or who have actually died due to companies who put profit before human health concerns, and then try to cover up anything that is discovered that links their product to sickness and disease!

How many more cases of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, behavior and learning disorders must we see before we realize the truth?  Why isn't this an issue that the American people are educated about?

One of the best ways that I have found to help remove a lot of these toxic substances from our bodies is to use a natural mineral called zeolite.

Silver Shield with Aqua Sol

What Is Silver Sol Technology?

According to Dr. Gordon Pedersen, Silver Sol is simply superfine silver particles dispersed in deionized water. The term “Sol” is a chemical designation of a pure mineral, such as metallic silver, permanently suspended in water where the mineral’s charge is transferred to the entire body of water. Silver Sol technology includes advanced scientific research and new product development utilizing its anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties.

What Does Silver Sol Do?

Silver Sol has the ability to destroy 143 types of bacteria, both forms of viruses, mold, yeast, and a limited number of parasites. It can also purify water (US Patent Office, Nov. 2006). Silver Sol can be used to treat over three hundred conditions; these are listed in the book A Fighting Chance by Dr. Gordon Pedersen.

Dr. Pedersen notes that Silver Sol functions as a non-toxic disinfectant for internal or external use as it comes in three forms: liquid, topical gel, and aerosolized. From toenail fungus to rashes, Silver Sol aids the immune system in reducing the bacteria, viruses, and mold it encounters.

So did you ever wonder what really is in that "Fast Food" burger you are eating every day for lunch?  Would you believe that a large majority of people don't even want to know what is in their food?  Does that even make sense?  It is a fact, one that has been proven to be true time and time again, "You ARE what you EAT!"  Take a look at this little cartoon short.  You may be surprised.

It seems that in the modern world, everything now seems to be about:

FAST, EASY & CHEAP?

The Food We Eat Really Does Matter!

In a world where our food supply is so tainted, not to mention less nutritious due to the use of herbicides and pesticides destroying the minerals in the ground that are necessary for growing healthy food supplies; we need to make better choices for our food, and also use supplementation as a way to be sure of getting the proper nutrients.  The supplements I use, in my opinion, and according to the tests done on them, are some of the best of the best in pure nutrients.  Do you know what is in your supplements and how they are made?  We do!

Cuke Skywalker takes on Darth Tader in...

STORE WARS: THE ORGANIC REBELLION

A Supermarket Far, Far Away (May 10, 2005)--The Organic Trade Association (OTA) and Free Range Studios today launched a sci-fi supermarket saga, "Store Wars: The Organic Rebellion" (www.storewars.org), on the Internet. The five-minute movie features Cuke Skywalker, Princess Lettuce, Chewbroccoli and other organic rebels—played by real vegetables dressed as Star Wars characters—battling it out with Darth Tader, the evil lord of the Dark Side of the Farm.

Store Wars is an outreach effort of OTA to educate consumers about the many benefits of organic products. By spoofing a pop culture phenomenon like Star Wars, OTA hopes to attract a new generation of organic consumers, especially “Gen Xers” who grew up loving Luke, Leia and Han, and are now increasingly concerned about making healthy food choices for their families.

“If you think about it, a battle is currently being waged over food in America, and the direction agriculture will take in the future. We’re asking in a light-hearted way for people to think about the choices they make at the grocery store,” said Katherine DiMatteo, executive director of the Organic Trade Association.

Store Wars is the brainchild of Free Range Studios, makers of the 2003 smash hit The Meatrix (www.themeatrix.com), an online movie seen by more than 10 million viewers, translated into four languages and honored at the Webbys, Sundance, South by Southwest and a dozen other prestigious festivals and contests. To obtain a Beta SP or DVD copy of the mini movie, contact Holly Givens at the Organic Trade Association (www.ota.com).

It is truly important to eat the right foods to stay healthy, but it is equally important to supplement and add the nutrients we can no longer get from our food supply.  To find out more about the only nutritional supplements I recommend, visit:

Most people wouldn't even think of going out in public before they took their daily shower.  Besides, it just feels good when our skin and hair is clean.  The question is, if it feels so good when we are clean on the outside, how much better does it feel when we are clean on the inside?  Does it make a difference?

When you cleanse you body, you can help undo years of damage due to toxic build up.  Let's face it, we put lots of toxic food in our bodies, we breathe toxic air, we drink toxic water laced with chlorine and fluoride, and we wonder why we have low energy, allergies, and lots of other health problems.  Toxicity is really a problem in todays world.

In the U.S., cleansing became a popular practice during the 1920s and 1930s, but it actually dates back to ancient Greece. Today, it is a practice done by a large number of people who accept that proper digestion is crucial for maintaining overall health and wellness.

When our digestion is working properly, all of the food we eat is broken down and used by our bodies, or flushed out as a waste product.  On the flip side, when our digestive systems are sluggish and aren't working properly, food particles often get left behind.  It is believed that this food that gets left in the digestive system eventually creates a buildup that can produce toxins, which can then contribute to symptoms of fatigue and eventually be linked to many other illnesses. Sluggish digestion and sludge in the bowels  may also reduce our bodies efficiency in eliminating toxins and waste.

CleanStart is a comprehensive approach to cleansing the whole body. It contains laxative herbs to facilitate the cleansing of the intestinal tract. Soothing herbs blended into the formula help support gentle cleansing. Herbs that help rekindle the ability of the digestive system to properly handle digestion, absorption and waste elimination are also part of this product. Because the digestive system is not alone in the waste-elimination process, herbs for detoxifying the accessory organs (liver, gallbladder, pancreas) and the urinary system are incorporated into this formula. Blood purification is also an important aspect of body cleansing; hence, reputable blood-purifying herbs are also components of the CleanStart program.

Laxative Herbs

The laxative herbs in this formula help remove toxic debris that build up in the colon. Psyllium and fenugreek seeds are high in fiber and have a bulk laxative action, which helps support optimal gastrointestinal transit. Cascara sagrada, yellow dock, buckthorn and Turkey rhubarb are high in anthraquinones. These substances act on the large intestines, stimulating colon peristalsis to promote elimination.

Marshmallow, licorice, aloe and ginger soothe the digestive system while cleansing. Marshmallow root contains mucilaginous polysaccharides that help protect and soothe tissues. Licorice and ginger are reported to have antispasmodic and gastroprotective effects.

Sarsaparilla, red clover, echinacea, burdock, Oregon grape, couch grass, milk thistle and dandelion are purifying herbs in this pack. They are recommended for periodic “spring cleaning” of the body. Their mild diuretic effects are beneficial in promoting the elimination of toxins via the urinary system. In addition, sarsaparilla, through its sweat-promoting properties, enhances toxin elimination from the lymph and circulatory systems.

Bentonite and sodium copper chlorophyllin are detoxifying ingredients. Bentonite adsorbs toxins, facilitating their removal from the bowel. Sodium copper chlorophyllin is a green pigment found in almost all plants. It has been used to aid in the removal of various toxins via the liver and remains a key compound for improving the function of essential detoxification pathways.

Pepsin, capsicum, potassium citrate and lactobacillus help restore improved function of the digestive system. Anytime a deficiency of proteolytic enzymes exists, bits of undigested protein may remain in the body, causing difficulties. Pepsin supports efficient protein digestion and protects the intestines from foreign invaders. Capsicum is used to improve digestion and relieve occasional gastrointestinal problems. Potassium citrate plays a role in gastric secretion and enzyme reactions, helping to support digestion. Lactobacillus spores were thoughtfully blended into this cleanse to help re-establish the balance of these beneficial organisms. CleanStart is a thorough, yet gentle cleanse that is perfect for just about anyone. The ingredients in CleanStart are incorporated into a capsule packet and a powder drink mix packet (available in Apple-Cinnamon and Wild Berry flavors) that make cleansing easy and convenient.

If you are looking for a great way to teach your children, and even yourself, more about herbs and their uses then this is a fun way to do just that.  Kids love games, so they won't even know they're learning something that could make a lifetime of difference.

Learn about edible and medicinal plants, then go on a nature walk to explore the plants that grow right in your area.  I wish I would have had a game like this when I was growing up.

I recently spoke with a 23 year old woman who was so excited to learn about natural remedies and how to use food and supplements to support her own health.  She told me that she had grown her own garden for the first time, and was simply ecstatic to gather all of the information she could about how to live her live in the healthiest ways possible.  It was so good to see someone so young who was truly taking an interest, not only in her own quality of life, but also of those around her.  You are beautiful Ashley L.  It is a true honor and pleasure to know you.

Here is a video that I ran across of  another young woman who has taken a true interest in helping herself and in educating others.  She is talking about how to decalcify the pineal gland.  There is a lot of truly good information in this short clip.  I really enjoyed this video, and I think my readers will also.

To find out more about the types of supplements mentioned in the video, visit:

I am seeing a big change now in what a lot of younger people are becoming interested in.  That is a good sign.  Maybe there is still a lot of hope for the world.  These are the people who will be running it soon.  It is quite refreshing to see them caring about their own health, the health of others, and even the health of our planet as a whole eco system.  What do you think?  Are you seeing a change like I am?

Are you feeling tired all the time? Having trouble sleeping?  Having trouble keeping your weight down?  Having lots of aches and pains all over your body?

Often, these are signs of chronic fatigue living with stress for an extended period of time.  Whether it be a stressful job, marriage or relationship, or some other crisis in your life, it can be a real drain on your energy.  If you are also not getting enough nutrition and are eating poorly, that can make you even more prone to fatigue.

In the March 4, 2013 episode of Dr. Oz., hormone expert Dr. Jennifer Landa (Dr. Jen) discusseed the 4 biggest energy deficiencies and their solutions.  Gluten intolerance, lack of iron, and lack of iodione were seen as significant problems for a lot of people.  Dr. Jen also suggested that detoxing was very important to help with fatigue.
Take our Brilliant Body Health Assessment to help you determine what may be out of balance in your body:

In an article from 10/29/12 from the Dr. Oz website by By Pina LoGiudice ND, LAc, Siobhan Bleakney, ND, and Peter Bongiorno ND, LAc, Co-Medical Directors of Inner Source Health in New York, it states that, "Conventional thought used to consider fats like coconut oil to be unhealthy and contribute to heart disease. We now know that this isn’t true. In fact, coconut oil is actually a heart healthy food that can keep your body running smoother in a few different ways."  "Studies have show that intake of coconut oil can help our bodies mount resistance to both viruses and bacteria that can cause illness. Even more, it also can help to fight off yeast, fungus and candida." Below is a great infographic that explains more of the benefits of coconut oil.

A new kind of milk in your grocery? It has come to my attention that the dairy industry is now trying to put aspartame in our milk supply, and when it happens, you might not even know it. The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) have filed a petition with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), asking them to change the definition of milk, as well as 17 other dairy products. The reason why the definition would have to be changed is that if they add aspartame to 'milk', it would no longer qualify to be called milk under the FDA's current definition.

Definition of Milk
The FDA's current definition of milk: “Milk is the lacteal secretion, practically free from colostrum, obtained by the complete milking of one or more healthy cows. Milk that is in final package form for beverage use shall have been pasteurized or ultrapasteurized, and shall contain not less than 81/4 percent milk solids not fat and not less than 31/4 percent milkfat. Milk may have been adjusted by separating part of the milkfat therefrom, or by adding thereto cream, concentrated milk, dry whole milk, skim milk, concentrated skim milk, or nonfat dry milk. Milk may be homogenized.”

Why would they even consider putting aspartame in milk?  Well, here's the kicker - it's all in the name of making a buck!  It seems that the consumption of milk is going down, especially flavored milk in schools, due to the high calorie content (think chocolate and strawberry flavored milk).  The NY Daily News reports that  other dairy products such as sour cream, evaporated milk, eggnog, half-and-half, and yogurt would also be up for swapping in the aspartame.

Isn't it bad enough that our milk now contains huge amounts of hormones, antibiotics and gentically modified organisms (GMOs) from GMO feed used for cows; not to mention whatever it is that is making the milk stay good for far longer than is natural!  These chemicals, hormones and antibiotics are doing a real number on our immune systems, and even (along with antibiotics in meats and chicken); and studies are showing that they are making us all antibiotic resistant to the superbugs that are going around.  We won't even talk about what it is doing to the cows.  A good movie to watch to find out more about what they are doing to our food supply is "Food, Inc."  which is available to watch for free on www.topdocumentaryfilms.com.

Now the dairy industry wants to put a pure poison (aspartame) into our milk, without even labeling it as such.  So how will you know if you are drinking milk that contains aspartame?  You wont!  They are saying that the milk would be helpful to all of the overweight kids???  Would it, or would it just be helpful to the milk producers to help them sell more milk?  An article in the Huffington Post says today that the campaign manager of SumofUs.org, issued a press release stating that, “Hyper-sweet additives like aspartame rewire children’s brains so that they always want sugary foods, turning the kids into tiny consumption machines." In an article on Wealth Daily, Jeff Seigel says,  "Bottom line: The government says you can't drink milk in its purest form, the way God created it, but you can drink a toxic cocktail of chemicals that a bunch of lobbyists and politicians have decided is in your best interest."

Aspartame Molecule

The sad part of all of this, is that aspartame is now in almost all chewing gum, many low calorie foods, and even most of the jello in restaurant salad bars.  Don't believe it?  Check it out for yourself.  Just ask your local restaurant if the jello on their salad bar is diet.  Here is a great article to read on the dangers of aspartame, and some studies that have been done:  http://www.decodedscience.com/aspartame-unlabeled-in-milk/26673/2

In my opinion, the biggest reason why there are so many overweight children, and adults in our society, is due to all of the chemically processed foods and junk foods, genetically modified foods (GMOs), and poison ingredients that are this country's poor excuses for food.  There is junk, and there is food; it either nourishes your body, or it is a dead junk product that does nothing but harm.  I believe that there are so many overweight people because they are starving their bodies of nutrition.  Did you know that anything that says, "enriched" means that the vitamins and minerals have been processed out, and their chemical counterparts have replaced them?  Yes, that's right, our food is "enriched" with chemicals.

It seems to be getting harder and harder to stay healthy and to stay away from all of the chemical laden foods and drinks in our society.  A lot of the foods that are served up to us American citizens are even banned from other countries!  Wake up America!!!
