Article from November, 2014 edition of the
Rushville Republican Newspaper  Rushville, Indiana

Over the past decade, the energy drink phenomenon has become a multi-billion dollar business.  It has also caught the attention of numerous doctors, nutritionists and scientists world-wide.  Besides the huge sugar content, the caffeine content is also a real concern.  The caffeine in these drinks is also chemically created caffeine, and doesn’t even come from natural sources.  One drink contains such a huge amount of it, that there are concerns about, and actual cases of heart attacks, strokes and even death linked to consuming these products.  And young people are guzzling these drinks down like water!   As if this isn’t bad enough, there is also another little known ingredient that also poses a big question of safety.  That ingredient is taurine.
In nature, taurine is a free form amino acid.  It is a natural substance that is found in foods like milk, meat, fish and eggs; and is also manufactured in the body from cysteine, an amino acid.  Taurine was actually first discovered in the bile of bulls, but it is now synthetically produced for the energy drink market by the truckload. It has been found, that taurine can stimulate the central nervous system, so too much of it could certainly not be a good thing.
Our bodies use taurine during strenuous exercise, and also during times of stress, but what happens if we get to much of it?  That question hasn’t even been fully answered by the scientific community. Researchers say they’re curious and puzzled still about the function of taurine in the brain, and have more questions than answers.  In a recent article from MedicalNewsToday.com, researchers at Weill Cornell Medical Collegein New York say they were “surprised” to find taurine “extraordinarily active” on brain receptors.  They found that taurine works deep inside the brain, in the “regulatory” area of the thalamus, and interacts with the brain’s neurotransmitters
Synthetic taurine has been implicated in illnesses such as high blood pressure, strokes, seizures and heart disease. After causing deaths of several consumers, it has even been banned in some Scandinavian countries.

A healthy organic diet can give you all of the taurine your body needs, without the horrific side effects of its artificial chemical counterpart.  You might want to think again about the artificial, chemically created caffeine, taurine and sugar (usually high fructose corn syrup which is also some really bad news) that is in your energy drink.  Are you really willing to take such a big risk, or let your children take such a big risk with their lives?
Here is some good news.  Recently, a company called Valentus has developed a healthy energy drink.  It contains only 4 grams of organic cane sugar, and all natural ingredients (not dangerous laboratory created chemicals). It is in a convenient stick pack that can simply be added to 12 - 16 ounces of water.

Ingredients:
Organic cane sugar, Inulin dietary fiber, Citric acid, Potassium citrate, Natural cherry powder, Natural blueberry powder, Stevia (leaf), Natural flavor, Natural caffeine from coffee bean, Guarana seed powder, Maqui berry powder, Green tea powder, Gotu kola powder, Maca (root) powder, Rhodiola Rosea powder, Siberian ginseng powder, Natural color.

Does it seem like no matter what you do, you don't seem to have enough energy to get through your busy day?  If you are like a big majority of people, then you would probably answer "YES" to this question.  Everywhere you look, people are using coffee, cappuccino, and energy drinks to try and solve the issue of having too much day left after their energy is gone.  Some report having no energy even when they wake up in the morning. From 2008 to 2012, energy drink sales grew by a whopping 60%.  But do you really know what is in that energy drink?  Take a look at this February 2013 report from CNN.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/06/health/time-energy-drink/

The energy drinks have a lot more caffeine in them than most drinks.  Caffeine is a stimulant and it makes most people feel more awake, but is it good for us?  Stimulants actually cause our bodies to release more energy, not have more energy!  Over time, this can take a toll, and we are actually more fatigued because of the stimulants.  So what's the answer to low energy if it's not stimulants?

FOOD is the answer!  Now, that being said, we have to consume food that has energy to give our bodies more energy.  We can't consume processed, dead, junk foods and expect to have more "get up and go."  You have probably heard the old saying, "You ARE what you EAT"?  That saying is very true.  The question is, what are you made of, ENERGY or GARBAGE?

Good foods contain stored energy.  That is what the carbs, fats and sugars are.  Food must be digested, transported and metabolized to create energy for our bodies.  If more fuel is consumed than the body can convert to energy, then it is stored.  That is why eating more doesn't give us more energy.  You can tell a lot about how much energy your body has by checking your pH levels.  If you pH is in the normal neutral range of around 6.6, you probably have a pretty good supply of energy; however, if your pH is lower, like a huge majority of people, then you are more likely on the lethargic side of life.

Now you are probably wondering, which nutrients actually increase energy production in our bodies?  Those would include B-Complex vitamins (Balanced B Complex), magnesium, zinc, iodine, L-Carnitine, and vitamin D3.

Energy isn't just a function of food, it is also mood related.  Depression and discouragement makes you feel tired and less enthused about life.  Depression and fatigue are usually linked.

Tips for a Better Mood:
  • Meditate and pray to get in touch with your deeper spiritual awareness
  • Get counseling, having someone to talk to about your troubles will often lift your mood
  • Set goals and work to achieve something meaningful in your life
  • Serve others less fortunate than yourself
My favorite natural mood enhancer is St. John's Wort.  Here are a few links of interest http://www.chiro.org/nutrition/FULL/St_John's_Wort_Vs_Drugs.shtml

Lack of exercise can also be a big link to fatigue and even depression.  Be sure to get enough moderate exercise from activities like walking, swimming and lymphasizing.

Many people have found lymphasizing helpful for many reasons, including fatigue, depression, detoxification and even weight loss.  The reason that people do this is to help open and shut the lymph valves of their lymphatic system.  The lymph system is what moves wastes and toxic materials out of the body.  The only things that will move lymph are deep breathing and exercise, both of which many people never do.  When you begin to lymphasize, it is recommended that you drink up to 2 glasses of warm water.  The water helps to get the lymph fluid in your body moving.

Here is how it's done.  Place both bare feet on the center of a mat at shoulder length apart.  Without taking your feet off of the mat, begin to bounce.  (Never take your feet off of the mat for this exercise).  As you bounce, breathe 20 quick breaths through your nose to fill your lungs with air. then do 20 quick short breaths out through your mouth. to empty your lungs as much as possible.  Keep repeating the breaths as you bounce.  This creates a vibrational energy vortex that can help transform the cells in your body (including fat cells).  Vibrational weight loss is all the rage in Hollywood right now, but unlike many of the stars, you don't need a machine to do it for you. It is best to start lymphasizing for about 5 – 10 minutes first thing in the morning, and then lengthen the amount of time as needed.  Lymphasizing can help increase the levels of oxygen in your body's cells.  This can also be done with a mini trampoline (rebounder), just remember, don't pick your feet up and jump, just bounce!  Below is a very interesting video from the pioneer of lymphasizing Dr. Samuel West.

It's that time of year again....flu season.  I thought I might take a moment to remind all of my readers that there are some natural ways to beat the viruses and flus that are everywhere running rampant this season of the year.

Just a few days ago, a friend emailed me, then another called me.  They had some very sad news.  A friend of mine, who was a great healer had passed away due to a heart attack.  His family was told that his heart attack was the result of his struggle to breathe due to flu complications.

We are all told that we should get our annual flu shots, but I, like many others, have a lot of reservations about this (and this is only my opinion, you must decide for yourself).  There is a lot of controversy over these shots, just as there is controversy over the safety of vaccines.  Here is a video that really made me think even more about the controversy:

Here is a great link from a doctor who has devoted her life to the study of vaccines.
It is called The Truth About the Flu Shot:

As I said earlier, you must decide for yourself.  Often, people who are very immune compromised may find that the benefit may be worth the risk.  But if you are someone who is looking for some natural ways to help protect yourself and your family this flu season, you might want to check out the link to some of the natural tried and true remedies I have posted in the past.  They are at the link below.

Team Hoyt

In honor of Father's day, it seems appropriate to share the inspiring story of Rick and Dick Hoyt (Team Hoyt).  This story was originally published in Sports Illustrated on June 20, 2005.  I was moved to tears reading the story and watching the video, and I believe many of my readers will be also.  The story is a story of true selfless love.  It is about an awesome bond between father and son.  It is my hope that all who read this are as inspired by it as I have been.  Be sure to watch the four-minute video of this amazing story of a father's amazing love and devotion available here.

Strongest Dad in the World
By Rick Reilly for Sports Illustrated

I try to be a good father. Give my kids mulligans. Work nights to pay for their text messaging. Take them to swimsuit shoots.

But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck.

Eighty-five times he's pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles in marathons. Eight times he's not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a wheelchair but also towed him 2.4 miles in a dinghy while swimming and pedaled him 112 miles in a seat on the handlebars – all in the same day.

Dick's also pulled him cross-country skiing, taken him on his back mountain climbing and once hauled him across the U.S. on a bike. Makes taking your son bowling look a little lame, right?

And what has Rick done for his father? Not much – except save his life.

This love story began in Winchester, Mass., 43 years ago, when Rick was strangled by the umbilical cord during birth, leaving him brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs.

"He'll be a vegetable the rest of his life," Dick says doctors told him and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. "Put him in an institution."

But the Hoyts weren't buying it. They noticed the way Rick's eyes followed them around the room. When Rick was 11 they took him to the engineering department at Tufts University and asked if there was anything to help the boy communicate. "No way," Dick says he was told. "There's nothing going on in his brain."

"Tell him a joke," Dick countered. They did. Rick laughed. Turns out a lot was going on in his brain.

Rigged up with a computer that allowed him to control the cursor by touching a switch with the side of his head, Rick was finally able to communicate. First words? "Go Bruins!" And after a high school classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the school organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out, "Dad, I want to do that."

Yeah, right. How was Dick, a self-described "porker" who never ran more than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he tried. "Then it was me who was handicapped," Dick says. "I was sore for two weeks."

That day changed Rick's life. "Dad," he typed, "when we were running, it felt like I wasn't disabled anymore!"

And that sentence changed Dick's life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. He got into such hard-belly shape that he and Rick were ready to try the 1979 Boston Marathon.

"No way," Dick was told by a race official. The Hoyts weren't quite a single runner, and they weren't quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few years Dick and Rick just joined the massive field and ran anyway. Then they found a way to get into the race officially: In 1983 they ran another marathon so fast they made the qualifying time for Boston the following year.

Then somebody said, "Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?"

How's a guy who never learned to swim and hadn't ridden a bike since he was six going to haul his 110-pound kid through a triathlon? Still, Dick tried.

Now they've done 212 triathlons, including four grueling 15-hour Ironmans in Hawaii. It must be a buzzkill to be a 25-year-old stud getting passed by an old guy towing a grown man in a dinghy, don't you think?

Hey, Dick, why not see how you'd do on your own? "No way," he says. Dick does it purely for "the awesome feeling" he gets seeing Rick with a cantaloupe smile as they run, swim and ride together.

This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 24th Boston Marathon, in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters. Their best time? Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992 – only 35 minutes off the world record, which, in case you don't keep track of these things, happens to be held by a guy who was not pushing another man in a wheelchair at the time.

"No question about it," Rick types. "My dad is the Father of the Century."

And Dick got something else out of all this too. Two years ago he had a mild heart attack during a race. Doctors found that one of his arteries was 95% clogged. "If you hadn't been in such great shape," one doctor told him, "you probably would've died 15 years ago."

So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other's life.

Rick, who has his own apartment (he gets home care) and works in Boston, and Dick, retired from the military and living in Holland, Mass., always find ways to be together. They give speeches around the country and compete in some backbreaking race every weekend, including this Father's Day.

That night, Rick will buy his dad dinner, but the thing he really wants to give him is a gift he can never buy. "The thing I'd most like," Rick types, "is that my dad sit in the chair and I push him once."

On Saturday, May 25, 2013 I attended a fair where I set up a lot of dried herbs for sale, and taught others about using herbs.  I had a friend ask about a recipe using calendula for a ladies group she belongs to.  Here is a great recipe for calendula-orange cookies.  ENJOY!

CALENDULA-ORANGE COOKIES

 2 -3 T. dried calendula blossoms (or 6 - 8 fresh blossoms)
½ c. real butter, at room temperature
½ c. raw sugar
Grated zest of two oranges (orange part of the peel only)
2 T. orange concentrate, at room temperature
1 t. vanilla
2 eggs, lightly beaten
2 c. all purpose flour (whole grain is best)
2 ½ t. baking powder
¼ t. sea salt
1 c. almond halves
Preheat oven to 350° F. Lightly grease 2 cookie sheets. Rinse calendulas (if using fresh petals). Pull off petals and set aside. Do not rinse if using dried. Fresh or dried, chop the petals finely or process in a food processor. In a bowl, cream butter, sugar and orange rind until fluffy. Add orange juice concentrate and vanilla. Mix in eggs, stirring until blended. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Blend calendula petals and dry ingredients into creamed mixture. Drop dough by teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Press an almond half into each cookie. Bake 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Makes 3 to 4 dozen.

Note:  When making food with flower petals, blossoms or dried flowers, use only organic varieties.  Never use them from a garden center that sprays their plants, or from a source that you are not sure of.

This recipe was slightly modified from the original recipe at Lemon Verbena Lady's Blog

Here is a great video segment done by Bill Moyers in 2001 about the chemicals we are being exposed to on a daily basis.  If there were 20 new chemicals invented weekly in 2001, how many more have we been exposed to in the past 12 years since this segment was aired?  It's truly sad that there are so many people who are sick or who have actually died due to companies who put profit before human health concerns, and then try to cover up anything that is discovered that links their product to sickness and disease!

How many more cases of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, behavior and learning disorders must we see before we realize the truth?  Why isn't this an issue that the American people are educated about?

One of the best ways that I have found to help remove a lot of these toxic substances from our bodies is to use a natural mineral called zeolite.

To find out more or to order Zetox and other zeolite products see the link below.

Silver Shield with Aqua Sol

What Is Silver Sol Technology?

According to Dr. Gordon Pedersen, Silver Sol is simply superfine silver particles dispersed in deionized water. The term “Sol” is a chemical designation of a pure mineral, such as metallic silver, permanently suspended in water where the mineral’s charge is transferred to the entire body of water. Silver Sol technology includes advanced scientific research and new product development utilizing its anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties.

What Does Silver Sol Do?

Silver Sol has the ability to destroy 143 types of bacteria, both forms of viruses, mold, yeast, and a limited number of parasites. It can also purify water (US Patent Office, Nov. 2006). Silver Sol can be used to treat over three hundred conditions; these are listed in the book A Fighting Chance by Dr. Gordon Pedersen.

Dr. Pedersen notes that Silver Sol functions as a non-toxic disinfectant for internal or external use as it comes in three forms: liquid, topical gel, and aerosolized. From toenail fungus to rashes, Silver Sol aids the immune system in reducing the bacteria, viruses, and mold it encounters.
